Statement Regarding the cancellation of the 2020 North Country Trail Run

It is truly with a heavy heart that we had to cancel this year’s North Country Trail Run. We tried our best to put as many safety measures in place to put on a successful event. Some of the hurdles and challenges to ensure that every volunteer and runner was safe at the race were too impossible that even our 20 person committee realized that there was no viable option. Even with enhanced safety measures including hand sanitizer, gloves, face masks, aid station safety zones and procedures the chance that one runner or more than one could contract Covid-19 was, in the end the chance we could not take. In addition, we can’t predict the future, but limits on the number at outdoor organized activities continue to look grim.

As we promised from the start, if the race was cancelled we would transfer all runners to the following year (August 28th and 29th 2021 or August 27th and 28th 2022) and we honor that pledge. Even though the costs that have added up to enhance the safety measures has damaged the race’s financial bedrock, safety of each and every runner is more important and over the next year we will rebuild to prepare for a successful 2021 race.

To our committee, sponsors, volunteers and the community thank you for your support and for those who have already said “We’ll be back next year, we’ll be ready” from runners to volunteers we are humbled by you.

We have covered a lot of details in this live video and we encourage you to review this video for expanded details of why and the process of deferrals to (August 28th and 29th 2021 or August 27th and 28th 2022).

3 Options:

1) To secure your spot for 2021 or 2022 please email us at support@northcountrytrailrun.com letting us know which year you would like to transfer your registration to. Please let us know by August 7th at the latest. We will transfer you into the same race and wave for the time being, but as space begins to open up with runners choosing between the years we will provide you with options to move between races prior to opening up any additional race registration spots after August 7th. The faster you can let us know of your decision the better.

2) We have had some runners ask if they could donate their entry fee to for the 2020 race to the race. If you would like to do that please email support@northcountrytrailrun.com and you will receive a link to register for (August 28th and 29th 2021 or August 27th and 28th 2022). Please let us know no later than August 7th if you would like to do this. Please do not feel you have to do this and know that we would rather see you run with us even if it’s in 2022 if you can’t make it next year. We appreciate and thank you.

3) If you do not see yourself being able to participate in the race, we will release your spot and you can let us know by emailing support@northcountrytrailrun.com. As always, there are no refunds for entry fees, especially in a year where Covid-19 and the restrictions, ramifications and uncertainty has devastated so many events including the North Country Trail Run. We hope you will continue to run with us in 2021 and beyond and we will continue to work to make it the race experience you have grown to love or yearned to experience.

My heart goes out to you and I encourage you to keep the race events alive by showing your support and continuing to train and race.
